Hamilton County lies immediately north of Marion County, home of Indianapolis, the 15th largest city in America. But Hamilton County far exceeds the traditional definition of “bedroom community.”

Approximately 66,855 residents leave Hamilton County every day to work elsewhere. That’s 33 percent of the county’s workforce. Meanwhile, 32,187 workers from other counties come into Hamilton County to work every day, making up 19 percent of the county’s workforce.

Based on Indiana tax returns for 2014, STATS Indiana found:

  • Hamilton County’s resident labor force - 203,501
  • Hamilton County residents who work in the county - 136,646
  • Hamilton County residents who work outside the county - 66,855
  • Non-Hamilton County residents working within the County - 32,187
